After being retrenched following the Toyota closure, ex-auto worker Youssef Batal found himself at a crossroads – with two sons and a mortgage, he needed to find a new employment pathway.
Pursuing a trade was always in the back of Youssef’s mind, here was an opportunity to take a chance on a whole new career.

Youssef Batal undertaking a carpentry apprenticeship through AGA Apprenticeships Plus
Youssef registered with Jobs Victoria Partner AGA Apprenticeships Plus and commenced a carpentry apprenticeship. He had no tools or prior carpentry skills, so he started from scratch.
According to his AGA field officer, Rob Paladino, Youssef is the best carpentry apprentice he has. He is thriving in his new work and he is a role model for younger apprentices.
His current host employer Casello says his skills and attitude are both excellent. Casello is an inclusive and supportive employer and has allowed Youssef to work flexibly to support his religious observance.
Youssef is not looking back now that he has found his passion: “I take pride in my work. I want to learn as quickly as I can but at the same time make sure I’m learning properly.”
