Vinnia is training to become a dental assistant after moving to Melbourne from India.

Having run a clothing store in India, when Vinnia moved to Melbourne she struggled to find work in her field.

After visiting the Jobs Victoria website, she applied for an Earn and Lean program – giving participants 12-months of paid secure work – as a dental assistant with Dental Health Services Victoria.

Being part of the program means Vinnia is getting practical work experience while completing her qualification.

“That’s the best part of the program, you’re getting to learn and actually work at the same time,” Vinnia said.

Julia, Director of People Strategy at Dental Health Services Victoria says that they’re trying to create a sense of community to bring people together.

“There’s lots of career pathways that becoming a dental assistant opens up for you, and so we’re trying to bring people on that journey and start thinking about what a career in public oral health could be,” she said.
