Rhian was facing challenges many young jobseekers experience: the issue of unstable employment. Working part-time in a café, she would often arrive for a shift at 5am only to be sent home after a few hours. She was managing an ongoing medical condition that meant some roles were not suitable for her.
Jobs Victoria Partner Taskforce helped Rhian to consider her transferrable skills and she decided to apply for a Jobs Victoria Community Traineeship, delivered in partnership with the Victorian Council of Social Services.
Rhian working at Star Health
The traineeships offer young people roles in the community services industry including aged care, allied health and youth services. At the same time, they complete qualifications at TAFE.
Rhian secured a role in the Service Access and Support Team at Star Health in Prahran, where she works four days a week and spends one day studying at RMIT. Taskforce supports Rhian throughout her traineeship with weekly meetings to ensure she is on track.
Josh Barretto from Star Health says his organisation faces recruitment challenges because many people move on quickly from community service roles. The traineeship program enables them to identity young people with a passion to work in the sector and Star Health nurtures their development.
Rhian had previous aspirations to perform in musical theatre, but now has a new commitment to working with people experiencing disadvantage. The opportunity has offered her a whole new perspective.
“It’s really enlightened the way I am with people and just how I think about life in general.”
