A collaborative approach has reaped rewards for all partners at Victoria’s aged care organisation BlueCross Sapphire Care. Young people are being supported through training and work experience to forge careers in the industry, helping to create a vibrant community environment for residents.
Starting with just one residence in 2003, Sapphire Care recently merged with BlueCross and has grown into one of the most successful and highly regarded Aged Care operators in Victoria, providing warm, vibrant village living for residents.
BlueCross Sapphire Care has formed a partnership with Jobs Victoria through Jobs Victoria Partner Whitelion and the Emprevo digital employment service to give long-term jobseekers pathways to genuine training towards careers in aged care. For BlueCross Sapphire Care this is an effective initiative to bring workers into its industry.
Kali Webb is one young woman who has come to work at the Westgarth BlueCross Sapphire residence. Kali's personal circumstances meant she experienced struggles trying to get into work and a stable life. Whitelion supported Kali to take positive steps to forge a path in hospitality, getting her work experience at the BlueCross Sapphire cafe and training with Holmesglen.
Kali has been so successful in the role that she is now working as a trainee, managing the cafe. Kali loves her work and the residents love her.
For the aged care industry, encouraging young people into the work is important for both them, and the residents. Kate Tonge at BlueCross SapphireCare and Wendy Fergie from Emprevo both believe that “good kids make bad choices, but if they take the initiative to resurrect their lives they need to be supported.”
Jobs Victoria Partner Whitelion works with young people in the youth justice system to open doors to opportunities, positive relationships and community connections through role model, mentoring, employment and outreach programs and through preventative programs in the broader community.
