Discovering your next career step, what job might be best for you, how to network or apply for roles – these are all things Ros can help with.

Jobs Victoria Career Counsellors provide career guidance to people who are looking for work or seeking a career change. The service is for people who need personalised advice on career options and can manage their own job search.

Recently, Ros helped a single mum of four who had been volunteering in her community for years but needed to find paid work.

“She was an incredibly capable woman who needed help to showcase her skills on her resume and step into a role she deserved,” Ros says.

The same week, Ros supported a young man who wanted to work in physiotherapy but didn’t have the prerequisite skills or academic record.

“He had overwhelmed himself with research trying to figure out how to get into a role,”

“In the end, it just took us a single appointment to navigate a pathway to further study, building on his experience of working as a trainer in a gym,” she says.

These are a couple of the career issues Ros helps people navigate in a typical day of appointments. Some people might need help to make a change and Ros can help them move from study to work, gain confidence, network, or learn soft skills such as communication or adaptability. Others feel overwhelmed or lost about what job is right for them. Ros says many people are feeling like this during the pandemic.

In Ros’ experience, a lot of people don’t realise how a career counsellor can help them, often thinking they need everything sorted before they book an appointment. Everyone can get stuck sometimes, and career counsellors can help.

“We can bring a fresh perspective to whatever career issue you may be facing and help you find clarity,” she says.

Career counsellors use their experience, tools, and techniques to help you find the job that suits your skills and interests. They help you think about your strengths and what you want from your career. They can give you the confidence to pursue your goals.

“I think everyone needs some sort of counsellor or guide at some point in their life to help them find their place in work – whether it’s a family member, or professional.”

Ros speaks from experience. She saw a career counsellor herself before returning to work after starting a family.

“I felt disconnected to the workplace and unsure of what to do. My career counsellor helped me so much in a short space of time and I decided I wanted to help people in the same way.”

Ros encourages anyone who needs some guidance to book an appointment with a Jobs Victoria Career Counsellor.

“Career counselling is for everyone. No matter what you’re looking for, we have the experience to guide you through it.”
