Patricia Carlyon, 29 years old and a mother of two, had not worked since 2015. She had experienced homelessness and serious mental health issues and had a criminal record. Patricia was referred to Jobs Victoria Partner FGM in Ballarat, who committed to providing her the intense support she needed to get back into the workforce.
Patricia says, “I did a fair bit of damage to myself, my life and my family.”
June Harper at FGM worked closely with Patricia. The journey started with setting personal and employment goals, and organising dental care, a haircut, and new clothes. Volunteer work at radio station VOICE FM Ballarat gradually built her confidence.
June said Patricia faced huge barriers but “she just wanted that change.”
Patricia’s long-term goal was to work in the construction industry. Jobs Victoria supported her to complete her Certificate III in Civil Construction. At the same time, she was offered work cleaning with ACE Training, which was a significant step in her journey. She also applied to the court have her license reinstated.
Patricia says her self-esteem has improved and she can now afford to buy things for her children.
“Now that I’m working, and a bit financially better off, and having my license back, I feel like I’ve got my life back.”
