Aydarus Mohamed came to Australia from Somalia five years ago. After arriving, he set about earning his Certificate III in Civil Construction as well as a Certificate II in Electro Technology. He set his sights on working in the construction industry but couldn’t find the right opportunity to get his foot in the door.
Once he got connected to the programs offered through Jobs Victoria Partners the Brotherhood of Saint Laurence and North Melbourne Football Club’s community arm, The Huddle, Aydarus was put forward to SJ Higgins to work as a labourer on the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Preston public housing redevelopment site. The DHHS Public Tenant Employment Program (PTEP) creates employment opportunities for public tenants through DHHS contracts.
SJ Higgins is now supporting him to get further qualifications. His optimistic attitude and his passion for his chosen career have made him a steadfast employee of the company, who is committed to helping Aydarus realise his dreams.
The Huddle is an initiative of the North Melbourne Football Club, supporting young people in the community to gain employment through a range of innovative career programs. Working with Brotherhood of St Laurence, The Huddle is providing extra assistance to young people from culturally diverse backgrounds in the North Melbourne, Flemington, and Kensington areas via a suite of job readiness programs including resume writing, interview skills, and an understanding of the Australian work culture.
